Background
About Patrick Brock
My research is part of the multidisciplinary project CoFutures: Pathways to Possible Presents and looks into futurism in Latin America. I am particularly concerned with the Afrofuturism movement in Brazil and its implications for cultural production and regeneration, racial identity, and resistance to authoritarianism. Study objects include books, films, videogames and artworks. I am also a journalist and translator specializing in Latin America business and finance who has worked for major media organizations in the US and Brazil. I am also skilled in new media, in-depth reporting, and literary journalism. I broke through early on while still living in Brazil, becoming known in college for my web publishing efforts and later for reporting on local and world news, and translating high-profile content for my home town's largest newspaper at the time. Having translation experience proved critical once I decided to move to the US in 2006 and helped land a coveted role with The Wall Street Journal. In the last few years, I have reported from New York for a variety of Brazilian outlets, including national newspapers Valor, Estado de S. Paulo and Folha de S. Paulo, and internet portal Terra Networks. The stories range from a prescient in-depth look into Brazilian foreign policy more recently to market-moving coverage of the country's officials and businesses. My profile offers a proven track record of converting news content to and from English and Portuguese. My 18-year career in the field includes translating and editing the Portuguese version of The Wall Street Journal, as well as syndicated content from The New York Times, The Independent, and El País. My last position in the field involved translating and editing the English version of Valor Econômico. My in-depth knowledge of both Brazilian and American cultural nuances offers a definitive edge for working seamlessly in news translation and cross-cultural editing. The most recent work also entailed operating content management systems (CMS) and a newsletter. Beyond my work with Valor, I maintain a growing portfolio of translation clients that have included JOTA, a legal-oriented news site in Brazil, and the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art (MASP), and art publishers in the US and Spain. Besides, I have collaborated in publishing books as one of the principals with a writer’s collective that released over ten works between 2004 and 2006. I am currently writing a science fiction novel about Brazil and working with an agent to get it published there.
