Background
About Patrick Burns
I have been a senior researcher at the Economic Roundtable in Los Angeles, California, for over 20 years, carrying out applied social science research into urban problems. This includes investigations and policy recommendations about labor market dynamics, social service and public assistance delivery, affordable housing, poverty, homelessness, residential displacement, and the environmental footprint of regional economies. Prior to joining the Economic Roundtable in 2002, I was a graduate researcher and teaching assistant in UCLA's Department of Geography, and a graduate researcher at the UCLA Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies. That work focused on industry sector analysis, such as the Southern California household furniture, animation and jewelry industries. I also was a graduate researcher and teaching assistant at Kent State University while pursuing my Master's degree; my thesis research examined the rise of temporary employment agencies and contingent work in Northeast Ohio. My undergraduate studies were at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, with a semester spent interning at the National Association of State Development Agencies in Washington, D.C. These jobs and degree programs have given me a broad foundation for public policy research; labor market information; economic impacts analysis; GIS data mapping; survey development; LMI training; qualitative data interview and focus group process; literature research; proposal/report writing and presentation. I have extensive experience analyzing labor market outcomes for targeted groups of workers. I also have many years experience compiling, merging and analyzing large demographic and socioeconomic datasets, including deterministic and probabilistic matching of confidential administrative datasets from public agencies.
