About Patrick Couvreur

Patrick COUVREUR is Emeritus Professor at Paris-Saclay University, member of the "Académie des Sciences" and holder of the chair of “Innovations Technologiques” (2010) at the « Collège de France ». He is a Senior Member of the “Institut Universitaire de France” since 2009. He was the recipient of two grants from the European Research Council (ERC), a highly competitive attribution in Europe. He has hold many important national and international academic positions as Director of the UMR CNRS 8612, Director of the Doctoral School “Therapeutic Innovation” and founder member of the pole of competitivity MEDICEN. During 30 years, Patrick COUVREUR was also Extraordinary Professor at the University of Louvain. He was/is a member of the board of governors of many international organizations and scientific committees. He has been the chair of a panel of ERC. Prof COUVREUR’s contributions in the field of drug delivery and nanomedicine are highly recognized around the world with more than 650 research articles, some of them in prestigious journals (ie. Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Materials, Nature Communications, Science Advances, PNAS, Cancer Research, JACS etc.)(Web of Science H-index 105). A nanomedicine invented in Couvreur’s lab has reached a complete phase clinical trial for the treatment of resistant hepatocarcinoma. He is among the highly cited scientists (Clarivate). He founded three start-up companies, one of them (Bioalliance) entered the stock market in 2005. His major scientific contribution to the Pharmaceutical Sciences is recognized by numerous international and national awards (“Host Madsen Medal” 2007, Prix Galien 2009, “Médaille de l’Innovation" of the CNRS 2012, European Inventor Award 2013, Japan Higuchi Award 2015, Prix Achille le Bel 2019, etc.). Dr COUVREUR is also Doctor Honoris Causa of the Universities of Ghent and Montreal. Apart from being a member of the "Académie des Sciences", he is also appointed as a member of the "Académie des Technologies","Académie Nationale de Médecine" and was President 2020 of the "Académie Nationale de Pharmacie" in France. He is also a foreign member of the "Académie Royale de Médecine"(Belgium), the Royal Academy of Pharmacy (Spain), the European Academy of Sciences, the Academia Europaea, as well as the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Engineering, two of the three national academies in USA. He is also an international fellow of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology of Japan. Patrick Couvreur was decorated by the “Légion d’Honneur” (France) in 2018.
