About Patrick Hayes

I started as a Mechanical Engineering BSE in 2015 however I desired a degree and learning program that was more hands on and allowed me to apply the skills taught in lecture which is how I landed on Manufacturing Engineering at the ASU Polytechnic campus. Project based courses allow for the hands on approach in learning and lead to a position interning as a CNC machinist. I started from the ground up, first only running production and then slowly working my way into CNC setups on lathes as well as 3 and 5-axis mills. Starting in the production side of machining allowed me to watch the programs run and my background in manufacturing engineering lead into code refinement to improve production speeds or operator comfort and time management. Naturally my education’s background in Solidworks and CAD modeling aided my transition into CAM programming with both HSM Works and Mastercam. Upon completing relevant college course work and a year and a half apprenticing in a machine shop I decided to move to a new position to apply my college engineering experience and machinist skills. I took a position as manufacturing engineer with a focus on machined components. Here I expanded on my knowledge of GD & T as well as fixture design to control critical machined features of aerospace and defense components and assemblies. I also began working with welded components and designed fixtures to help control weld distortion as well as improve the welding process for accuracy and time management.
