About Patrick Johnston

Who knew that sticking to your guns really does work? If there's grit and determination behind it, of course it does! I'm currently a sports reporter at The Province and Vancouver Sun — our newsrooms merged in 2016 — a role I've been in in since the fall of 2018. For the preceding 18 months I was a reporter on our newsroom’s digitally-focused Van Live team. Before that, I was a digital editor for The Provincie, a job I landed in 2013 after a year as a freelancer, which I spent writing for CanucksArmy.com, BC Hockey Now and running The Province's Try and Tackle rugby blog. That year of freelancing followed five years of training and working as a public school teacher (I hold history and teaching degrees from UBC), then a year of 'back to school' at Langara College, where I completed the Certificate in Journalism program at Langara College in April 2012. My interests are broad (sports, the arts, politics…) but at their core are people. I’m fascinated by what people do and why they do it. I'm Vancouver-born-and-raised, but I've also lived in the US, the UK and New Zealand. Where will I land next? I can't wait to find out. As long as there is writing to be done, I'm keen to check it out.
