Background
About Patrick Luley
Patrick Luley is a leading technical expert and R&D manager in the field of automated driving and digital twins with more than 20 years of experience in international research and development. He is member of the management board at the institute for digital technologies at JOANNEUM RESEARCH since 2010. Patrick Luley is responsible for the R&D coordination of JOANNEUM RESEARCH in the field of mobility research and is representing the company in several institutions like the European Partnership on connected, cooperative and automated mobility (CCAM), in the association for standardization of automation and measuring systems (ASAM), in the Open Auto Drive Forum (OADF), in the Austrian Traffics Telematics Cluster (ATTC), in Austria’s Innovation Hub for Smart Mobility (ALP.Lab) and in the Strategic Alliance for Automated Mobility (SAAM Austria). He is heading the newly founded research group DIGITAL TWIN LAB, which is operating a unique set of survey grade 3D measurement systems and developing AI-based workflows for the automated creation of simulation-ready digital twins from mapping data. Those Digital Twins of reality are crucial for virtual investigations of real-life environments by simulation. Current applications cover test and validation of autonomous systems and their sensors, automated asset-management, infrastructure inspections as well as simulation of local effects of climate change and mitigation strategies. Working towards sustainability and climate neutrality in the context of mobility, safety, production and smart cities/regions. R&D activities in the field of highly automated driving are focused on three different R&D topics, which provide the basis for the development, simulation and validation of highly automated driving functions:(i) Reference Sensor Systems for Mobile Mapping and Perception,(ii) Automated Creation of Ultra High Definition Maps (UHDmaps(R)) and simulation ready 3D models as well as Map-based evaluation methods for automated driving functions and environmental perception systems including sensor simulation.
