Some investors mistake impact investing for chasing feel-good ideas—or they think they have to sacrifice returns to invest sustainably. But in reality, purpose and performance can and should coexist. I’m the founder & president of a firm that proves that but let’s start from the beginning… I grew up as far from Wall Street as you can get—in a small Northern California town. My mom didn’t drive, and we didn’t own bikes, so my world view was limited. That changed in high school when a devastating oil spill in the San Francisco Bay opened my eyes to the environment’s fragility and the world beyond my small-town borders. That sent me down a path of caring for the environment. After college, I worked for mission-based organizations before enrolling in grad school at Boston College to study the social economy. I took a $5/hour part-time job advertised by one of my professors. It was for researching something called “social investing.” It was the early ’80s and this niche idea was barely on the radar of mainstream finance. That small opportunity became the start of my investment career. Eventually I worked at Franklin Research & Development, a pioneer in socially responsible investing, then a Boston-based RIA, where I met Chat Reynders. Not only did Chat possess a brilliant investment mind, but he also shared my conviction that capital can be a force for meaningful change while driving smarter investment decisions. Recognizing an untapped opportunity to better serve sustainably minded investors, Chat and I took the leap and founded Reynders McVeigh in 2005.
