About Patrick Oshea

Dr Patrick O’Shea is an Associate Director in Molecular Diagnostics, Precision Medicine and Biosamples within the R&D Oncology Unit at AstraZeneca, leading internal Molecular Diagnostics laboratory activities. He was awarded a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology from the University of Leeds, received his PhD in Physiology and Molecular Biology from Imperial College London, and completed an International Marie Curie Research Fellowship at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA. Pat joined AstraZeneca in 2008 and has gained extensive experience in drug discovery and development across diagnostics development and testing, compound repositioning, clinical compound open innovation, complex cell assay development, phenotypic screening, high content biology, and functional genomics through the establishment and development of a genome-wide arrayed CRISPR screening platform, supporting the identification of novel target opportunities. From 2018-2023, Pat was also the Bioscience Programme Lead for AstraZeneca’s R&D Undergraduate Industrial Placement Student (UIPS) scheme. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Pat trained AstraZeneca, GSK and University of Cambridge staff during the build of the Cambridge National Test Centre, and was appointed as Lab Head of the AstraZeneca UK COVID-19 Assessment Centre in Cambridge, achieving accreditation to the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard for testing and calibration laboratories from UKAS. The AstraZeneca UK COVID-19 Assessment Centre ensured a safer workplace for employees and the supply of critical medicines to patients.
