About Patrick Parkhill

Over 16 years in software development, system design and database support. Throughout my career I have worked with many programming languages and database platforms. I began my technology career as a business analyst at USBank. Since the beginning I have always been interested in large data systems. How does the bank effortlessly provide you and millions of other customers all of your transactions? I advanced as a programmer and became a development manager. After that I focused more on database technology, first mastering the tuning and writing of queries and then moving to my current role as a database administrator. High performance and high scalability without the cost of new hardware is always my goal. New hardware may buy time, but new architecture and a critical eye will always gain much more. I have led several development meetings to help understand how databases process queries. How to properly write queries. How to properly index tables. This has resulted in a culture which puts the eyes on the original code. I show them the tools I use and how I use them. I was a developer, I know their challenges, I know their deadlines. I help them work through those and manage to get good code out, the first time. Being a successful programmer as well as a successful DBA allows me a unique opportunity to automate and enhance tedious tasks and more complex reporting.
