From Uncertainty to Purpose: A 19-Year Journey Out West Sometimes the scariest decisions lead to the most rewarding destinations. Twenty years ago, I felt stuck. I was living in Ottawa, working office jobs, and uncertain about my future. After many heartfelt conversations with friends and family, I realized what I needed: a fresh start. So I made a leap that changed everything—I packed up and moved miles west to Edmonton, Alberta. Starting From Scratch I arrived in Edmonton 19 years ago with no friends, no network, and no clear path forward. I had family nearby in Wetaskiwin, and a job lined up as a landscaping laborer in construction—but that was it. Those first years were humbling. I was learning more than just how to pour concrete or build fences—I was learning how to build a life from the ground up. Each day brought new challenges, and each one shaped me. Growth in Every Direction As I grew more skilled on the job site, I also grew as a person. Eight years into my journey, I met the woman who would become my wife. We've now been married for 10 years and are raising three amazing daughters, aged 9, 8, and 6. Professionally, I spent 14 years at my first construction company, working my way up from laborer to Lead Hand and then to Working Foreman. Then came another tough but necessary decision—I changed companies. For the past five years, I’ve continued to grow, eventually stepping into the role of Jr. Site Superintendent. Each transition brought uncertainty—but also new opportunities to learn, lead, and contribute. Looking Back—and Forward What started as a scary move across the country has become a life filled with purpose, challenge, and fulfillment. I’m proud of the journey, grateful for those who supported me, and excited for what’s next. To anyone out there feeling stuck: sometimes the best thing you can do is take the leap—even if it scares you.
