About Patrick Sands

I am passionate about the intersect of science, technology and the law, and achieving commercial solutions to complex problems. Starting off my career in industry, my roles in research and product management introduced me to innovation and intellectual property. This formed the foundation for my subsequent career as a specialist IP lawyer for more than 20 years (and counting). I have particular expertise in IP litigation, strategic advice and patents. I act for leading multi-national and Australian companies in a broad range of sectors, including pharmaceutical, medical devices, digital mobile radio, optical communications, consumer, mining and automotive. With my background I am able to communicate effectively with scientists, management, boards and legal counsel in technical industries. You can rely on me to manage your risk, reputation and exposure in critical situations, and to deliver commercially-focused, strategic legal advice. I am known for being pragmatic, calm, commercial and concise and I am recognised in the market for my technical excellence and never losing sight of the commercial goals. I have been fortunate to run some of the highest profile cases on patent infringement and validity in Australia in recent years. In addition to patents, I advise on and conduct proceedings relating to copyright, registered designs, breach of confidential information and consumer law claims. I have extensive experience managing Australian IP disputes that are part of multi-jurisdictional proceedings where global strategies are developed and pursued.
