Background

About Patrick Walsh

I have had the pleasure of working with talented students, postdoctoral researchers, visiting scholars and my coworkers at the University of Pennsylvania to advance science and education. In recent years, much of my research has been in collaboration with scientists from all over the world. Together we have published over 300 peer reviewed manuscripts in the areas of catalysis, methods development, and reaction mechanisms. For the latest publication see: https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en & Since 2022 I have also been Director of the Penn Chemistry NSF sponsored REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) program. The goal of this program is to provide research experiences for students at a tier 1 research institution working with our world renowned faculty. Many of our participants are from traditionally under represented groups in the sciences. Our REU program has been instrumental in our participants gaining admissions to graduate programs, such as CalTech, Berkeley, Yale, Penn, and other top institutions in the US. More about me: After graduating from Valhalla High School, I received my B.A. from UC San Diego (1986, research with Prof. Charles Perrin) and Ph.D. in organometallic chemistry with Prof. Robert G. Bergman at UC Berkeley (1991). I was an NSF postdoctoral fellow with Prof. K. Barry. Sharpless at the Scripps Research Institute. I became an assistant professor at San Diego State University in 1994 and from was also a professor at Centro de Graduados e Investigación, Instituto Tecnológico de Tijuana (Mexico), which I remain associated with to this day. I received tenure at SDSU in but gave it up and moved to my current position at the University of Pennsylvania. With my brilliant colleague, Prof. Marisa Kozlowski, I co-wrote Fundamentals of Asymmetric Catalysis, a graduate level text book.
