About Paul Aylin

I lead and manage a team of researchers as Principal Investigator investigating variations in performance in healthcare delivery. In other recent work, I have been principal Investigator on two further NIHR grants investigating the impact of a mortality surveillance system on UK hospitals and examining the association of surgical procedures during pregnancy with birth outcomes. I also lead a research theme within the NIHR funded Patient Safety Translational Research Centre and a workstream within the NIHR funded Health Protection Research Unit for Healthcare Associated Infection and Antimicrobial Resistance. Methods and systems resulting directly from my research are used by both managers and clinicians in acute trusts to monitor quality of care. My analyses were partially responsible for the Health Care Commission investigation into Mid Staffordshire. I also provide monthly mortality alerts to the Care Quality Commission. Past research has included; an investigation into patient mortality at general practice level for the Shipman Inquiry; statistical consultant to the Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry into peri operative and post-operative deaths using Hospital Episode Statistics; links between excess winter mortality, housing condition and deprivation using routine mortality and census data; and a system for investigation of disease clusters within Europe. I am the director of postgraduate teaching within the School of Public Health, responsible for ensuring quality. I oversee three on-campus masters degrees including an MPH. I am also co-director of the new online Global MPH which launched in 2019.
