Background
About Paul Blowers
The best part of being a user experience designer? Connecting with customers in the field—seeing first-hand the usability issues they deal with and crafting solutions to meet their needs. In my case, it’s the cardiac clinicians doing amazing work every day. My job is to make their job easier—and I love it. I’m always asking questions in order to understand how they work and how they process information so I can deliver the best product possible. I’m a researcher and planner at heart but I don’t suffer from “analysis paralysis.” Keenly self-aware, I know my strengths and limitations and I will speak up and ask for help if needed. These competencies/traits have served me well in my career as demonstrated by several successful projects: •Engineered a state-of-the-art alerting system that is now standard in all Medtronic Wireless medical devices. •Pioneered, championed, and earned wide recognition as the “go-to” expert of contextual design application. •Redesigned an unintuitive LCD-based display for a pacemaker analyzer into an easy-to-use windows interface. An equally enjoyable part of my job is mentoring junior user experience designers. I am at my best when, through honest feedback, I can instill confidence, assign challenging tasks, and share my knowledge to bring out the best in others. It is always energizing to watch their performance—and career—flourish. As much as I enjoy collaborating with customers and mentoring others, I couldn’t be effective at either without a strong technical background. My experience has afforded me the opportunity to establish myself as an influential member of AAMI, an expert in the application of new industry standards, and a champion for defining best practice. As a user experience designer, I have learned to ask great questions, listen attentively, and work tirelessly to please the customer. I live in the future, but pull on past experiences….and I never stop asking “What is the BEST product I can deliver?”
