About Paul Cox

Currently the interim Dean of the Mandel Humanities Center at Cuyahoga Community College, Cox previously taught at Oberlin College, the Cleveland Institute of Music, Case Western Reserve University, and served as the founding director of Sitka Fest, a summer-long arts and culture festival in Sitka, Alaska. An interdisciplinary scholar, Cox graduated from CWRU in 2011 with a Ph.D. in musicology. His dissertation, “Collaged Codes: John Cage’s Credo in US," explored Cage and Merce Cunningham’s early dance-theater collaborations and the artistic and intellectual communities from which they drew inspiration during the early-1940s. His dissertation was informed in part from his work at the Cleveland Museum of Art (1995-2005) as the Assistant Curator of Musical Arts and co-Director of the AKI Festival of New Music, where he produced over 900 programs, ranging from operas and recitals to lectures, symposia and large-scale "Happenings." An active composer, percussionist and curator, performance projects have taken Cox across the globe and include parades, dance and theater productions, films, audio documentaries and educational programs for museums, concert halls, theaters and colleges. Unifying these diverse projects is a commitment to diversity, student success, and community development.
