About Paul Downes

I am first and foremost following my passion for meteorology, and increasingly observing and researching climate parameters. As I observe change and the potential outcomes in both day to day weather variability and risk, The impacts, preparedness, communication and mitigation solutions are forefront in my mind. Climate change, while more subtle and gradual is already giving some indications of the many challenges which we will continue to face and have to adapt to. While the global parameters are changing in a more subtle way, individual events show the alarming potential for highly impactful events. Here in Ireland we have traditionally had quite a temperate climate, with impactful events being rare, however in recent years we have seen hints of that increased volatility. Personal observations and motivating research My own observations and research have lead me to look at moisture combined with temperature, not just temperature alone as a more realistic climate change marker using Theata E in place of observed temperatures. While I have discovered I am not alone in this, it is still largely muted or dismissed in the climate community and I am always open for constructive conversations on the matter. Climate Change mitigation is also a keen interest, with a focus on better intercommunication between different agencies to really find tangible solutions not routed in politics, ideology, activism, or maximized profit, but actually plausible ideas on a global scale.
