Background

About Paul Fergus

With over 30 years of experience in artificial intelligence, I am a Professor in Applied Machine Learning at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), and the Head of the Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies Research Institute (AIDTRI) Conservation AI Research Group. My core competencies are computer vision, natural language processing, and generative AI, and I have multiple certifications in deep learning for these domains from NVIDIA and Coursera. As a Professor, I develop and teach courses on machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI at LJMU, and mentor students and researchers on various AI projects. As a Co-Founder of Conservation AI, I apply AI to address environmental and wildlife conservation challenges, such as detecting illegal poaching, monitoring endangered species, and analysing habitat changes. I also develop small LLM experts using RAG to address knowledge loss in large LLMs, like ChatGPT, as well as reduce hallucinations caused by out of date information. I am also an active researcher and innovator, with several publications and patents on computer vision and generative AI, and collaborations with various partners and stakeholders from academia, industry, and non-governmental organisations. My mission is to advance AI research and education, and empower communities to leverage AI for positive social and environmental impact.
