About Paul Hargrove
Dr. Paul Hargrove received his Ph.D. from Stanford University's Program in Scientific Computing and Computational Mathematics (SCCM) in 2004. Prior to that Paul received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University in 1994, completing a triple major in Physics (magna cum laude), Math, and Computer Science. Since 1992, Paul has been a user and developer of the Linux operating system. He wrote the Linux implementations of POSIX FIFO files (a.k.a. named pipes) and the ETXTBUSY error code, both of which have been a part of the Linux kernel since before the 1.0 release. His most significant contribution to the Linux kernel is the Macintosh (HFS) file system module, which amounts to over lines of C code. Additionally, this contribution has been a part of the Linux kernel distribution since version 2.2.0. Paul initially worked part-time at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab during the Summer of on the M-VIA project. In June Paul returned to LBNL at part-time to take over as PI on the M-VIA project. Paul became a full-time employee at LBNL in September and continued the development of M-VIA through its final 1.2 release in September 2002. Paul's interests include RDMA-capable networks and systems software for high performance computing. As a member of the LBNL staff, Paul served as a member of the Virtual Interface Developer Forum (VIDF) and the Direct Access Transport (DAT) Collaborative, two industry standards groups working in this area. Past work in systems-level software includes Berkeley Lab Checkpoint-Restart (BLCR), a US Department of Energy funded project to produce a production-quality system-level checkpointing implementation suitable for use in preemptive scheduling, migration and fault tolerance. Paul was LBNL’s PI for the multi-institutional effort which funded BLCR, and was lead developer of the BLCR implementation. His current software projects include UPC++, Global Address Space Networking (GASNet-EX) and Berkeley Unified Parallel C (BUPC). UPC++ is a C++ library-based implementation of the Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) programming model which complements one-sided Remote Memory Access (RMA) with Remote Procedure Call (RPC). GASNet-EX provides an abstraction of a network interconnect suitable for implementation of PGAS libraries and languages such as UPC++, UPC, Chapel, Legion and Fortran08 coarrays (among others). Paul is PI of the Pagoda project, funded by the US Department of Energy's Exascale Computing Project (ECP), under which UPC++ and GASNet-EX are developed.
