About Paul Havemann

Paul graduated from the University of South Africa in 1995 with a degree in natural resources management and has completed a master’s degree in protected areas development. The bulk of his professional career in South Africa was spent with the biodiversity management agency Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife in the sub-tropical regions of the KwaZulu-Natal Province. Currently he is a member of the stewardship team managing University of California Natural Reserve System properties in California's Inner Coast Range and Great Central Valley. Paul is an advocate for best management practices that aim to address domestic water needs in the Central Valley and in rural South Africa. He volunteers on a local Elementary School committee concerned with campus environmental health and outdoor education. Working in highly fragmented political, social and ecological landscapes has equipped Paul with a range of skills learned through grassroots conservation practice. His professional philosophies are strongly influenced by themes relating to the social, economic and ecological relevance of effective natural resources management, and he is developing professional perspectives that include the need for integrating environmental literacy curricula into early education toolboxes. He has lived in biodiversity hotspots throughout his life where a personal passion for natural history, culture, and the great outdoors inadvertently transitioned into his vocation. When not working on any number of voluntary projects in and around Davis Paul spends his free time exploring California with his family, soaking up American music culture and experimenting in creative and discussion writing. He is well traveled in Southern Africa and the American Northwest, and has consulted for the WWF in Vietnam.
