About Paul Howson

I joined BR as a locomotive fitter in 1973 which enabled me to expand my diesel locomotive experience and understand reliability and performance issues. I became a supervisor at York Depot then a Senior Supervisor position at Selhurst where I gained knowledge of third rail rolling stock at a busy surburban fleet maintenance depot. Then to Brighton as Production Manager followed by Depot Manager. These positions gave me much knowledge and experience of managing a large depot and sub depot with approx 150 members of staff from management to shop floor. Then to Supertram in Sheffield as Technical Engineer which gave me much experience and knowledge in other areas particularly the tramway infrastructure both during initial build through to operations. Much knowledge was gained working with the Utilities Companies, PTA, PTE, police & emergency services. I then moved to Siemens as a Project Manager which allowed me to gain experience of a build project including commissioning and testing through to actual passenger operations. Moving to Angel Trains allowed me to gain much experience working for a rolling stock leasing company and being involved with both suppliers and customers. I was responsible for engineering compliance of Angel Trains and its suppliers and customers. I also worked closely with the RSSB during the initial RISAS process as ROSCO representative through to role out within the industry. This enabled me to become involved on a consultancy basis with Voith Turbo GB after retiring in Dec 2009. I then worked for Railway Approvals assisting with certification services. I then carried out an internal RSSB audit of RISAS. I am an Associate Consultant with The QSS Group. Chartered Fellow Member of the Institute of Logistics and Transport including Chairman of the South Yorkshire Branch for two years. I am highly motivated and have much experience working in other countries including Europe, Scandinavia, USA, Canada and China. Specialties: Audit services and assisting with RISAS requirements & implementation. Many years experience in Traction and Rolling Stock Management, Maintenance Planning and Monitoring. Much experience in hands on locomotive and rolling stock inspections including new build, condition, overhaul, ex works and damage. I am now in my 59th year in the rail industry. I am available for short term contracts in the UK and world wide. I have been an Independent Member of the Railway Approvals Supervisory Board since 2018 which has enabled me to gain more knowledge and experience within the railway industry.
