About Paul Mummery

I run media and PR strategy for the Road Haulage Association (RHA) which means turning transport policy and industry issues into stories that cut through with government, media, and the public.I lead a team of three, which handles everything from day-to-day PR and digital to crisis comms, magazine production to national campaign delivery. A significant part of the job involves advising senior executives on reputational risk and shaping policy messaging, but just as much of it is about getting the fundamentals right, making sure we – and our colleagues – land the right punches the right way.The last year (2025) has been the most satisfying of my 15 years in strategic communications. We've grown our earned media coverage by 58% year-on-year, run an award-nominated campaign on freight crime (fingers crossed for February), and outperformed all of our peers for Tier 1 coverage ahead of the Chancellor’s Budget. I’ve also led multi-stakeholder comms that have helped secure policy successes with the Department for Transport, National Police Chiefs’ Council and Transport for London.My earlier career in the Metropolitan Police Service saw me manage their City of Westminster Press Office and copywrite and edit content from New Scotland Yard for my colleagues. This followed a significant stint in operational and resource planning roles keeping high-profile central London events safe – film premieres, royal visits and demonstrations.When I’m not leading the RHA’s PR function I’m regularly found behind a drum kit and mic at a gig somewhere in the UK – or further afield – playing rock 'n' roll (of a fashion) and sometimes posting about it on here.Happy to connect with fellow CIPR members and comms professionals – or if you just want to talk shop about grammar gaffes, music or the buzz of seeing your team's work work hit the wires.
