About Paul Saunders

Computer science has interested me ever since I took an online course on data science in High School. The ability of a computer to learn over time and the variety of problems a computer could solve was fascinating. Shortly after arriving at the University of Alberta, I joined the Undergraduate Artificial Intelligence Society at the University of Alberta where I promptly became involved in a variety of events and projects. I have built a query engine that supports queries on databases of more than 1 billion rows, hosted workshops for fellow students on Git and python virtual environments, and developed web applications for COVID contact tracing. As a result of my achievements, AMII and the University of Alberta reached out and asked if I would like to participate in a machine learning research competition called Project-X. Project-X is a two-month-long machine learning research competition, gathering the brightest undergraduate students in the field of AI / ML to compete for over dollars’ worth of prizes. Teams from MIT, Stanford, and Carnegie Mellon will be participating, and I will have the privilege of representing the University of Alberta. I am seeking challenging opportunities where I can use techniques from artificial intelligence and software engineering to push the boundaries of what computers and businesses can do.
