Background

About Paul Shaw

Hailed by The New York Times as “both a virtuoso with herculean technical command and a sensitive introspective artist,” Jamaican pianist Paul Shaw - a top prize-winner in the William Kapell International Piano Competition and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, has performed to high critical acclaim at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York; the Kennedy Center and the Hall of the Americas in Washington, D.C; and Beethovenhalle in Bonn. He has appeared as soloist with the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Rochester Philharmonic, Dayton Philharmonic, Richmond Symphony, Shreveport Symphony, Cape Cod Symphony and Minnesota orchestras and collaborated with conductors Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, William Eddins, George Manahan, Jorge Mester, Lukas Foss, and others. In September 2010, Shaw became the first artist from the Caribbean to appear in recital at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, China. He made his first appearance in Japan on April 1, 2013 in a Hiroshima Peace Concert featuring distinguished artists from around the world.Paul Shaw can be heard on compact disc in solo recitals of classical music: Live from New York, It's Paul Shaw; Caribbean Art Music: Le Grand Tour; and in a release on the Clarion label playing James P. Johnson’s Yamekraw: A Negro Rhapsody for piano solo and orchestra. YouTube appearances include a mini-lecture and performance of Oswald Russell’s Jamaican Dance at the College of the Bahamas in Nassau; Chopin’s Ballade No. 3 live from MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis; and selections from his soon-to-be-published Jamaican Songbook – eight piano transcriptions of Jamaican folk songs.
