I have worked in the NHS since 2010 with over two years of experience in Theatres and Theatre supplies and over ten years of experience in Clinical Engineering. My work in Theatres was predominantly involved with ordering of consumables and this required a basic understanding of how these were used on medical equipment, for example breathing circuits for anaesthetic machines. The potential risk of cancelling operations due to unavailability of stock required me to have a good knowledge of stock usage, suitable stock levels and delivery schedules. I was also responsible for arranging the service and repair of pneumatic tools such as drills and saws via external providers and for keeping a record of this work. My work in Clinical Engineering began with routine inspection and safety testing of medical equipment before progressing to minor repairs and servicing of equipment such as nebulisers and thermometers. Further training and experience then allowed me to progress to more complex servicing and repairs on a wider range of equipment using both general test equipment such as pressure meters and specialised test equipment and software. I have attended numerous manufacturer training courses to further enhance my knowledge of various devices including infusion pumps and ECG recorders. I have also carried out a wide range of repairs on both electronic and mechanical equipment, this combined experience has enabled me to progress in my career up to a Band 6 Specialist Clinical Technologist. I continuously work towards maintaining the targets for the department key performance indicators, focusing on higher risk items in areas that require enhanced support, I feel I am able to prioritise my workload and am able to adapt if urgent requests occur. I am currently in the process of compiling a portfolio of work for submission to the Register of Clinical Technologists with the aim of being accepted as soon as possible. I am a motivated individual and I get a lot of satisfaction from my job, I fully engage with my work environment and have a huge sense of pride in the job I do and the place that I work. I feel I actively promote the image of Clinical Engineering within my own hospital and beyond. I have a genuine interest in the development and advancement of medical technology and how it plays a part in the treatment of our patients.
