About Paul Wild

I have had the privilege of working throughout my two careers at what a colleague of mine described as “the fuzzy front end” of short-term and longer-term projects that focus on three aspects of development - workforce, economic, and international. I am at my most effective when I am collaborating with, or leading, teams that are charged with the design and delivery of training or development programs that require innovative approaches to implementation and that bring together partners who have not, heretofore, collaborated. My first career was in international development where I worked and lived for 15 years in West Africa, Asia, and South America. During this time I worked on or managed rural health care, rural development, land-use planning, natural resource management, and training projects. My most satisfying work occurred when I trained and led a multi-national project team that became an early adopter of participatory rural appraisals in rural West Africa. Our team’s approach was evaluated and emulated throughout the region. My second career has been primarily spent at Portland Community College and Mt. Hood Community College during which time I worked with more than 150 local companies to design and deliver training services for healthcare, bioscience, high tech, manufacturing, metals, and agricultural businesses. I helped to develop innovative approaches to employer engagement and training design that includes reverse engineering of jobs and performance management systems that were adopted region-wide by local community colleges. I have learned that workplace training must contribute and be explicitly linked to a company’s strategy goals in order to be effective at the micro level. As a corollary, workforce development programs must contribute to economic development at the macro level.
