Research topics at Simón Bolívar University Water quality of aquatic environments, based on bacterial indicators and environmental transmission of human pathogens and its drug resistance genes. Spatial distribution and human effects of bacterial pathogens on drinking waters. Molecular and isolation studies of relevant bacterial human pathogens like Vibrio cholerae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis and Helicobacter pylori. Isolation of microbial pathogens as relevant models for eco-physiological and genomic studies. Detection of microbial pathogens on aquatic organisms, particularly on those species consumed by humans like oysters. Life cycle of these pathogens included their human and animal hosts. Relevant bacterial groups involved in bio-geochemical cycles of elements such as sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB), metal resistance or organic carbon degradation such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa (laboratory experience with metal tolerance on this specie). Collect, isolate and maintain in laboratory cultures, environmental aerobic/anaerobic/ microaerophilic isolates of biotechnological interest. Planning and carrying out of sampling to find bacterial species of interest in tropical aquatic environments (e.g. Cariaco Trench), or tropical extreme environments (such as orthoquartzite caves at Roraima Tepuy ).
