About Paulo Morceiro

I am an economic consultant, researcher, and professor. My work broadly focuses on Economics, particularly in areas such as industrial organization, innovation studies, economic complexity, structural change, and regional development. Currently, I am a professor in the Master's in Economics program at IDP-SP. I also work as an economic consultant on demand for various organizations, especially in the fields of industrial development and public policy. I am available for consulting or research opportunities in Brazil and Europe. My work is data-driven and grounded in the use of modern applied methodologies, including statistics, econometrics, input-output analysis, and other case-specific analytical tools. I combine strong analytical skills with a focus on designing evidence-based public policies. With an eclectic academic background and a heterodox bias, I pursued my studies at esteemed universities in Brazil, culminating in a PhD in Economics from the University of São Paulo. I bring a unique blend of academic excellence and practical experience, having worked in the private sector at FIESP in São Paulo. Additionally, I've had the privilege of producing commissioned pieces on industrial development and public policies for influential institutions such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in the United States, as well as FIPE, IEDI, and CNI in Brazil, and WITS, CCRED-IDTT, and SARChI-ID in South Africa. During my academic journey, I had the opportunity to spend a semester at the University of Groningen, expanding my horizons and gaining valuable insights. Subsequently, I embarked on a transformative three-year senior postdoctoral position at the University of Johannesburg, a renowned centre for industrial development in the Global South. I have also worked as researcher in Economic Geography at the University of Utrecht, exploring the fascinating realm of regional diversification and its potential for driving economic growth. Leveraging cutting-edge methodologies and extensive databases, my work revolved around unleashing the untapped potential of regions by identifying their existing capabilities and forging collaborations between them. Outside of my professional pursuits, I enjoy travelling and immersing myself in new places, cultures, and experiences. Whether exploring picturesque beaches, majestic mountains, embarking on thrilling safaris, or delving into historical sites (my partner is a fantastic guide in this aspect).
