About Penina Waqatabu
I am a Pacific researcher, educator, and storyteller currently pursuing my PhD at the University of the Sunshine Coast. My work focuses on Indigenous resilience, historical relocations, and sustainable livelihoods across the Pacific. With a strong academic foundation and deep cultural grounding, I explore how colonial legacies continue to shape governance structures in Fiji. My Master’s research critically examined a colonial-era document that has contributed to ongoing confusion and division in village leadership;work that continues to inform current conversations about identity, authority, and power in Indigenous communities. Originally from Cikobia, Macuata and maternal links to Qalikarua, Matuku, Fiji, I’ve served as a teaching assistant at the University of the South Pacific and led regional dialogues on Indigenous business and development. I am passionate about centering Indigenous voices in policy, research, and leadership; and I believe history is not just our past, but our power.
