Background
About Pepper Boyer
Changing the World One Student at a Time “Changing the world one woman at a time” was the motto of The Colorado Women’s College at the University of Denver where I obtained my undergraduate degree. This motto inspired me to leave my career in the legal environment and to enter the field of education so that I could help “change the world one student at a time.” I chose ESL because it blended my love of the English language with the opportunity to empower people globally through language. • TEACHING AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT: I am a skilled educator. I have taught and designed engaging curriculum that unites the field’s best practices with student’s interests and needs for courses covering the four skills in ESL (7 levels: CEFR A1-C1), undergraduate first-year developmental and credit bearing composition, graduate research writing, academic success, career success, global citizenship, and work force development. • DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION (DEI): I engage in DEI by creating learning communities in the classroom which seek for common ground, collaborating with colleagues to support the division’s DEI mission, and understanding the institution’s DEI strategic plan within the institution’s historical and current context. • ORGANIZATION/ADMINISTRATION: I am skilled in project management. For example, I was instrumental in the organization, coordination, and the successful submission of an application to the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation. • STUDENT SUCCESS: I focus on program policies and procedures that optimize student success, such as students of concern, student advising, instructor performance, and professional development. • STUDENTS AS INDIVIDUALS: I focus on individual students and their individual goals. For example, I helped a graduate student write an application essay, which was instrumental in her being accepted into the graduate program of her choice. • COLLABORATION: I am a team player. I believe in sharing knowledge, sharing resources, and sharing the load even when it is not “technically” my job to do so. The important thing is to do a job superbly to ensure student success. It is a privilege to be an educator and to be part of “Changing the world one student at a time” through the teaching of the English language.
