About Pete Forbes

I’m starting my third career by entering the health and human services discipline through occupational therapy. My journey reflects curiosity, adaptability, and a desire to drive purposive change. It began in 1996 when I deferred physiotherapy to work full-time. A university scholarship offered an alternative pathway into engineering, where I spent 15 years refining technical systems to solve real-world problems. Over time, I became more interested in how systems impact human potential and engineering no longer filled my cup. Next, I pivoted into tourism as a cycling tour operator in Europe. I applied my coordination and leadership skills to craft memorable client experiences. Later, I moved into the not-for-profit sector facilitating a rehabilitation program in a female correctional centre. The program enabled women to train service dogs that assisted individuals with physical impairments, PTSD, and autism. I expanded the contract, facilitated community involvement, and helped deliver a Certificate program. Women in the program developed greater self-worth, communication, and social connection. While studying occupational therapy, I’ve also worked part-time with a youth mentoring organisation. A complementary I’m passionate about creating opportunities for young people, especially in light of how rigid systems can hinder their potential. I've also combined my experience with cycling tours and facilitated an annual cycling challenge to raise funds. I believe in proactive social investment and that my service through occupational therapy perspectives will help reduce long-term pressure on health and community services. As a white, male, educated professional, I acknowledge the privilege embedded within systems that benefit me. I strive to use that positionality responsibly and bring cultural awareness, systemic insight, and solution-oriented thinking to the table. I believe deeply in theory-informed action and lifelong learning. Now, I’m excited to contribute my diverse experience to the occupational therapy field and help shape physical, social, and institutional environments where young people and communities flourish.
