About Peter A. N. Bosman

I am a part-time professor of Evolutionary Algorithms at Delft University of Technology and a group leader at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI)(Center for Mathematics and Computer Science) located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands - I lead the Evolutionary Intelligence group that makes combinations of evolutionary algorithms and machine learning to innovate the AI research field and realize unique, state of the art optimization and learning techniques. This includes eXplainable AI techniques (through genetic programming), multi-objective optimization and learning, expensive optimization, and neural architecture search. Many applications are in the medical domain, with academic hospital partners, with a focal point on radiation oncology, but in general, target applications include all that require optimization and learning. My own core fundamental research focus is on the design and application of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) for single- and multi-objective optimization, and machine learning. The designed EAs are mostly model-based, meaning that a specific model is used to capture and exploit problem-specific features to guide the search for high-quality solutions more effectively and efficiently and get the most out of previously performed evaluations. My lab has laid the foundations of GOMEA (Gene-pool Optimal Mixing Evolutionary Algorithm)- a state-of-the-art highly scalable evolutionary algorithms family that has been shown to have the capacity to scale orders of magnitude better than classic evolutionary algorithms and be GPU compatible in multiple ways. GOMEA continues to be studied and expanded in my lab today.
