The experiences I’ve made in Japan have affected me substantially. For instance I believe in the superiority of a consistent TQM approach but take no stock in quality certificates that lead to quality handbooks which just collect dust on a shelf. That are labeled “quality” on the outside but contain cost reduction by all means at the inside. I also deeply regret that in Europe hardly any manager understands that “Kaizen” has a strong motivational aspect. Or that European enterprises rarely cultivate transparency and trust as preconditions for a free flow of information within their organizations. Also that in a natural resource-scarce country like Germany we speak about people as our most important resource but at the same time we don’t develop that resource in an appropriate manner. In the long run satisfied employees will achieve better results than frightened ones – especially when being under pressure. Nevertheless sanctions are the rule rather than a positive culture of trust. During my studies in Germany I learned that Japanese products were manufactured more cost-effectively because of a higher level of automation. Observing the reality in Japan I had to learn that the real progress can be found in the field of human resources. Are you prepared to learn, too?
