About Peter Barbosa

Dr. Barbosa began his undergraduate studies at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez campus, and earned his B.S. in biochemistry from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. He holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. His first postdoctoral fellowship was completed in HIV research at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, and his second postdoctoral training, also in HIV research, at the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology, University of California San Francisco. During his 14-year tenure at the California School of Podiatric Medicine, Dr. Barbosa served as a professor of several courses, including biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, and research methods. He served as a Director of Biochemistry at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in Harlem, New York City, from 2011 until 2019. He also served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Natural Sciences at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, San Juan, Puerto Rico, until 2022. He worked as a Professor of Immunology and Co-Director of Molecules to Medicine in the Basic Medical Sciences unit of the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in Sint Maarten in 2023 & 2024. Barbosa serves as Associate Dean for Biomedical Sciences at the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Research Interests: As a scientist, his primary interests involve 1) active learning methods and student assessment, 2) chronic complications of HIV infection, and 3) strategies to nurture empathy & patient/provider communication in medical education. He is committed to involving students in research endeavors, and his research teams have been widely published. Among his scientific publications, students in his research teams have been co-authors on more than 25 occasions. Teaching in a manner that intellectually stimulates his students is his passion as a professor. He is personable, approachable, and always available for his student’s needs.
