About Peter D. Winter

I am a sociologist specialising in Science and Technology Studies (STS), with a focus on analysing complex sociotechnical systems, particularly those involving Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications. My primary research interest centers on the challenges associated with developing, integrating, and implementing AI technologies in real-world contexts. This includes examining the roles of regulation, trust, and transparency, as well as understanding their impact on professional practices and organisational structures. Research portfolio - Development of a financial fraud simulation platform - Implementation of AI transparency regulations in Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the UK and EU- Governance of autonomous systems with evolving functionality- Resisting technological hype through art-led public engagement- Implementation of digital twins in cardiovascular medicine- Development of medical AI for the early diagnosis of a rare disease- Improving public inclusivity in robotics design- The training of visual expertise in medical and radiography education- The disclosure of mental health issues in professional sports- Provision of mental health support for medical students. Before transitioning to academia, I provided research support to two independent charities - The Mentor Ring and The Older People's Commissioner for Wales - in the voluntary sector. I also gained experience in the private sector as an investment associate at Legal and General PLC in Cardiff, UK. My research is primarily qualitative and conducted with interviews, focus groups, and/or video-based methods. Overall, I am a clear thinker, methodological and organised, with excellent verbal and written communication skills. I am keen to broaden my experiences, confront challenges, and make a positive difference through my own and related research projects. I am also passionate about health equity and the environment.
