I'm the CEO of EcoHealth Alliance a science-based non-profit that conducts research and outreach on the causes of emerging pandemic diseases, and their links to environmental change and conservation. My scientific research is focused on understanding the drivers of emerging diseases, and has shown that human activities (wildlife trade, land use change, travel and trade) are responsible for their emergence globally. This includes the first evidence that an emerging disease, chytridiomycosis, causes global amphibian declines, the first ever map of emerging disease 'hotspots', the identification of bats as a reservoir for SARS, and evidence that agricultural intensification drove the emergence of Nipah virus.I'm fascinated by the way infectious diseases emerge and cause devastating pandemics - from the global declines of amphibians to the spread of SARS, MERS and pandemic 'flu. My goals are to:1) Conduct the best science to understand what drives disease emergence;2) Develop innovative ways to stop emerging diseases in wildlife, livestock and people;3) Promote conservation of wildlife by building a healthier environment
