About Peter Durr

i work at the australian animal health laboratory (aahl) which is the australian government's high containment exotic animal disease (ead) diagnostic laboratory. i lead a small bioinformatics / epidemiology team, with a long term goal of developing a real-time molecular epidemiology system which could be used to assist in managing ead outbreaks. this applies particularly to determining the source of infection for affected farms. however, for this to happen requires integrated data management systems handling viral sequences and relating these to animal movements and enabling the modelling of wind plumes from infected farms. this real time molecular epidemiology system will take a number of years, as each component is an ambitious project in its own right, requiring both research to gain a deep understanding of the data and the building of the database systems to manage this data. however, if you have a look at the projects i have been involved in over the past 5 years, you will see that we are making slow, but steady progress towards our goal.
