Background

About Peter Flanagan

Peter Flanagan trained in Haematology and transfusion Medicine in the United Kingdom. He moved to New Zealand in 1998 to take up the role of National Medical Director of the newly created New Zealand Blood Service. He was the President of the International Society of Blood Transfusion from 2012-14 and also previously a member of the editorial board of Vox Sanguinis. He is a member of the WHO Expert panel on Blood Transfusion and also closely involved in Council of Europe activities relating to the development of the Guide to the preparation, use and quality assurance of blood components. He has a particular focus on blood safety and quality systems and has published widely on these topics. In June 2019 he decided to stand down from the Medical Director position and to take up the role as a transfusion medical specialist within the same organisation. This is the first step in a move to a phased retirement.
