About Peter Flinn

I have now retired from remunerated work but am a very active member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Previously, I had a relatively conventional career in engineering & manufacturing management in various transport and process industries, operating latterly at Head of Engineering/Director/Managing Director-level with responsibility for businesses in the £1m - £100m pa turnover range. I spent 2007 -17 period working at the interface between industry, government and universities. I acted as the start-up director of the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry, a £40m project. This was followed by a similar role for the HVM Catapult. Over the period 2012 - 2014, I worked as interim director for the Aerospace Technology Institute before handing over to the permanent management team. I was also chairman of the Advisory Board for the intelligent automation centre at Loughborough/Cranfield Universities over the period 2012 - 17. I have just finished as the 136th President of the IMechE, and until recently was a member of the Finance Board, and chairman of PEP Limited, the commercial arm of the Institution. Finally, I have written a book about managing technology and product development programmes, based on my practical experience in this field, which was published in February 2019 by John Wiley & Sons.
