About Peter Hayes

My motivation came from a scientific interest in infectious disease at an early age which developed into a desire to apply my education and experience into efforts to improve the lives of people across the world. I have been lucky enough to be in a position over the past 25+ years that combines i) basic scientific research into infectious disease pathogenesis with ii) scientific and technical support of clinical trials of vaccine candidates and support of a diverse network of fellow scientists through advising, training and trouble-shooting, both in the UK and across Africa. Rather than completely moving out of the laboratory, I remain a hands-on laboratory scientist whilst also overseeing and supporting the work of others, reviewing data and procedures in order to maintain the quality and reliability of data generated. My focus has been in the area of cellular immune responses to a variety of infectious diseases, primarily HIV-1 but also emerging infectious diseases and SARS-COV2. My experience and continued hands-on approach, enables me to be more effective in supporting the team both in laboratory technical and scientific matters as well as leading in laboratory health and safety.
