Background

About Peter K. Bijl

I am a paleoceanographer, who uses microfossil assemblages and organic biomarker proxies to reconstruct past ocean conditions. My research focus is on the interactions between ice, ocean and climate in the geologic past. Throughout my research career I have documented the oceanographic changes in the Southern Ocean, and study the interactions of that with the Antarctic Ice sheet. This research is typically conducted in highly diverse interdisciplinary teams. I teach Marine Science, Ice-Ocean Climate Interactions and Reconstructing Extreme Climate Transitions, in the Departments of Biology. Along this research interest, I am interested in the translation of scientific achievements to the general public, via media performances, development of educational programmes and public website development. Strong advocate of Open Science. Founding board member of Stichting Klimaathelpdesk. Founder of the taxonomic database palsys.org. Former chair of the Utrecht Young Academy.
