Background
About Peter Marina
I’m a sociologist and criminologist with a Ph.D. from the New School for Social Research in Manhattan. My scholarly work, including books like Human Rights Policing: Reimagining Law Enforcement in the 21st Century (Routledge Press) and Down and Out in New Orleans: Transgressive Living in the Informal Economy (Columbia University Press), looks into new and emergent forms of transgression within our complex late-modern social world. My approach to sociology and criminology integrates the dialectic of history and biography, enabling me to engage with a diverse array of social groups worldwide. My research spans a broad spectrum of cultural and social contexts, from inner-city youths and street performers to urban occultists and marginalized urban dwellers. With a keen eye for the intricacies of human behavior, I explore the lives of individuals on society’s fringes, unraveling the complexities of their experiences and interactions. I also look into the lives of religiously inspired inner-city residents, urban occultists, and law enforcement officers, offering valuable insights into the dynamics of power, resistance, and social control in contemporary urban environments. Through an interdisciplinary approach, I aim to bridge the gap between empirical observation and theoretical understanding, shedding light on the ever-evolving landscape of post-modern society. My scholarly pursuits reflect a deep commitment to understanding and contextualizing the complexities of human existence in an era marked by rapid change and social transformation. Additionally, I contribute to various magazines, journals, and newspapers, writing on topics such as politics, travel, veganism, and other areas that pique my curiosities. I travel extensively, observing human social life with an anthropological eye in megacities and remote places few have witnessed. My traveling adventures ignite my passions and curiosities heightening my sense of awareness and understanding of the earth and its inhabitants. Driven by a fierce love for animals, I hope to one day run an animal sanctuary. I live in existential freedom, not just in an attitude towards life, but a pure freedom that allows my soul to parade and dance. It frightens some people. I suspect some fear true freedom, and that fear makes some people cower, project, and act out in that fear. But freedom is a rare condition that I wish to share with others. I wish they could feel the freedom that lies in the deepest part of my being. Love to all those who understand this freedom, and best wishes to those yet to find it.
