About Peter Matthews

I am a Part-Qualified Patent Attorney at J A Kemp LLP in the Biotechnology & Life Sciences team. I passed the Intellectual Property Law PGCert at Queen Mary University of London with Distinction in 2023-2024. I studied for my PhD at the University of Cambridge, conducting my research at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (MRC LMB). Here, I investigated the molecular mechanisms of synaptic transmission, responsible for information transfer and storage in the brain. My work focussed on the identification and functional characterisation of synaptic protein interactions with the AMPA receptor. I have technical experience in proximity-labelling proteomics, confocal microscopy and in vitro electrophysiology. Additionally, I have experience in the production, purification and titration of custom Adeno-associated viruses (AAVs). During my PhD, I published first-author and co-author publications, notably contributing to a cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) paper published in the academic journal Nature. I also have experience in the field of drug discovery. I graduated with a first class MSci Pharmacology degree from the University of Bristol and spent over a year in industry after my PhD working on the development of ion channel modulators to treat various central nervous system disorders.
