About Peter Mayer

I have worked at all levels of government, from early roles with Anacortes Parks and Recreation and the US Forest Service through executive leadership positions in health, parks, and city administration. I currently serve as Deputy City Administrator and Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Tukwila, where I lead infrastructure and capital programs, and internal operations. My earlier roles include directing Washington State Parks, serving as COO of the Snohomish Health District, and driving innovation, equity, and strategy as Deputy Executive Director for Metro Parks Tacoma. I’ve guided agencies through challenges that demanded systems thinking, collaboration, and sensible decision making. I led the regional humanitarian response for 400+ asylum seekers and restructured public works operations. I’ve also helped direct statewide investments in parks and habitat improvements as a Governor-appointed board member, co-founded regional trail coalitions, and guided culture change through equity-focused leadership. An especially proud moment was when I led the county-wide public health response during the SR 530 Oso landslide. I directed emergency operations, coordinated with state and federal partners, and ensured continuity of operations in communicable disease control, environmental health, and community health. In every role I take on, I bring curiosity, courage, and respect for the people doing the work. I live near Seattle with my wife and our two incredible adult children, where I love spending time with my family and friends, trail running, hiking, swimming, and being outdoors. I’m also a loyal WSU Coug and a lifelong student who believes in building others up, celebrating success, and moving forward with purpose. As Will Rogers said, “Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.”
