About Peter McGuire

I graduated from Davidson College in 1996 with a degree in Theology, and then went on to become a fly-fishing guide both in Western North Carolina and Montana. After several years, I moved full-time to Montana and attended law school at the University of Montana in Missoula, graduating third in my class with high honors in 2002. I began my practice in a larger Asheville firm doing insurance defense litigation. I didn’t particularly enjoy it. Connections with clients were tenuous at best, and most of my time was spent working for various insurance companies. I decided to make a change. I broke out and formed a solo practice focusing on plaintiff ’s environmental work in sedimentation pollution and erosion control. I did enjoy that work, but again, some intellectual pursuit was missing. In 2014, having handled several litigation matters for Andy Strauss, I became familiar with the attorneys and estate planning practice niches at Strauss & Associates. I decided to make the leap, join the firm, and split my practice between estate planning and litigation. I can truly say that was the best career decision I could have made. It’s a difficult niche to master, but the benefit of knowing and helping my clients is truly wonderful. I now concentrate my practice on estate planning, including advanced planning techniques, asset protection strategies, business formations and succession planning, and fiduciary litigation. In 2017, I was welcomed in as a partner in the firm, and it is safe to say I’ve never been busier. I have a lovely home in Weaverville with my wife and two rambunctious sons. I now serve on my children’s school’s board of trustees, and I have also delved into some local politics, having been elected to Weaverville’s town council in 2023. When not practicing law, wrangling family, or huddling at town hall, I can either be found at one of our many area craft breweries or deep up on a blue line trout stream. I take great pride and joy in my endeavors, and I believe one can witness that in my work. Peter McGuire
