We are all aware that in today’s business world, the ability to adapt to change is more critical than ever. The pace of change is accelerating, and the companies that can adapt quickly will be the ones that succeed. This is where, in my opinion, effective leadership comes into play. In my 25 years career in the IT industry I have worked for companies of all sizes and business fields: ∙ fast-paced, startup alike companies experiencing tremendous growth and striving for change every single day; ∙ large global organisations with a more risk-averse, process-oriented corporate culture. I have learned that becoming more adaptable to change is a skill that can be developed with practice, commitment and self-reflection. But this is just the beginning of the leadership journey. You need to work every day to empower your teams to do the same. These are all key behaviours that have helped me empower my teams over the years: Create a culture of trust | Provide supportive autonomy | Set extremely high goals | Constantly challenge the status quo | Stay open to new ideas | Encourage experimentation | Learn from failures | Actively seek feedback from others. For those who embrace change with open arms, the possibilities are endless. These people feel comfortable to be creative, make decisions and take risks. It is at this point that great innovation can occur.
