About Peter P. Pramstaller

Medicine, biomedical research and leadership in healthcare are at the core of my professional life. If we manage to converge these three worlds and to empower the next generation of physician-scientists and physician-leaders, we will have a unique opportunity to both transform medicine and fix healthcare, from inside-out. I have had the opportunity and privilege to work as a clinician, biomedical researcher, leader and manager, overseeing and coordinating large multilevel, cross-disciplinary research projects and networking with the clinical-scientific community and industry. More than 20 exciting and intensive years of this cross-cutting experience form the basis of my professional life and mindset. As a neurologist and researcher I was involved in building and directing the first comprehensive Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and Movement Disorders Outpatient Clinic at the Central Hospital of Bozen/Bolzano (Italy) and in initiating and coordinating several large clinical and epidemiological studies, such as (i) the Neuroepidemiology Project South Tyrol (NEPT-Study: focused on PD and related disorders, applying a combination of epidemiology and pedigree-based genetics),(ii) the GenNova Health Care Program (MICROS Study: an extensive, two-stage survey aimed at characterizing the genetic epidemiology of Mendelian and complex diseases in South Tyrolean population isolates), and the Cooperative Health Research In South Tyrol (CHRIS-Study: a large prospective, single-site genetic population cohort study focused on understanding how the interaction between factors such as genomic, metabolomic, proteomic and environmental variation contributes to human health and disease). As a leader and manager I was involved in founding and directing the Institute of Genetic Medicine, which later served as a nucleus for the development of today’s Institute for Biomedicine at Eurac Research. In 2019 I turned my passion for leadership in medicine and healthcare into an entrepreneurial adventure and co-founded the RTD-Medicine for Leadership in Healthcare initiative. My favorite quote: “A ship is always safe at the shore, but that is not what it is built for”.
