Background
About Peter R. Barber
In 1982, I began my career as a photojournalist in Buffalo, New York as a stringer for the Associated Press wire service, and freelancing for local papers and area businesses. The first picture I ever had published was on the front page of the Buffalo Courier-Express of a young girl being rescued from a house fire on August 16, 1982. In April, 1984, I had my first picture go across the Associated Press wire of a firefighter cooling himself off at a house fire. In 1987, I landed my first full time staff photographer position at the Watertown Daily Times. At the Daily Times, I covered a wide range of assignments from breaking news to features. A few of my most memorable assignments included following the 10th Mountain Division to Homestead,Florida to document the damage from Hurricane Andrew, Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev in Ottawa, Ontario, Prince Charles and Princess Diana in Kingston, Ontario, and President Clinton visiting Fort Drum. In 1992, I was named the National Press Photographers Association Monthly News Photo Clip Contest Photographer of the Year in Region 2, that encompasses all newspapers in New York, Quebec, and Ontario. After a successful 15 year career at the Daily Times, I moved east to Schenectady to work as a staff photographer for The Daily Gazette. Again, covering a wide range of assignments from breaking news to professional sports. Since 2004, I have covered all New York Jets home games, a visit to Albany by the Dali Lama, and a visit to HVCC by President Barack Obama. In 2008 and again in 2009, I was named the National Press Photographers Association Monthly News Photo Clip Contest Photographer of the Year in Region 2. Additionaly in 2008, I won the Bruce Cromie Award from the Associated Press for outstanding news photography. My goals are simple. Change with the times and continue working diligently as a news and commercial photographer. Specialties: I am part of a mentoring program for up and coming photojournalists.
