About Peter Sherris
After practicing internal medicine and non-invasive cardiology for 34 years at Kaiser Permanente I retired in November 2008 and earned an MPH at UC Berkeley. I am pursuing my interests in global health and early childhood education. I'm an active member of the Rotary Club of Oakland chairing the KinderPrep Committee and participating in the World Community Service (WCS) Committee. My main current activity is running Rotary KinderPrep, a $80K/year effort to support all 33 transitional kindergarten classrooms in Oakland Unified School District with volunteers, supplies, books and toys. In 2014-15 we've committed $30K to a new project, the Transitional Kindergarten Arts-integration Project (TKAP), a teacher professional development program that supports an arts-based STEM curriculum. Internationally I've assisted in developing Rotary Foundation Global Grants for a well project in Kenya, a Family Planning project in Ethiopia, a cardiac surgery training program in El Salvador, and am currently working on a micro-finance scheme in Guatemala. With Tiba Foundation I'm supporting the development of a community-based health care system in Ugenya, a remote rural area in Nyanza Province, Kenya.
