About Peter Thorsheim

My research focuses on the environmental and cultural consequences of people's use of technology in Britain during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. My 2006 book, Inventing Pollution: Coal, Smoke, and Culture in Britain since 1800 (Ohio University Press), was reissued with a new preface and chronology in 2018. In 2015 Cambridge University Press published my second book, Waste into Weapons: Recycling in Britain during the Second World War. My most recent book, co-edited with Bill Luckin, is A Mighty Capital under Threat: The Environmental History of London, (Pittsburgh University Press, 2020). Since I joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in I have taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses in my areas of research specialization as well as in 20th-century world history. Specialties: British history since 1800, with an emphasis on interactions between technology, environment, and culture.
