About Peter Wakahora

Experienced Project Officer with a demonstrated history of working in the Development sector. I am Skilled in Analytical Skills, Report Writing, Climate Change Adaptation, Community Development, and Change Management. Strong community and social services professional with a Bachelor's degree focused in Environmental Science from Egerton University. It has taken me a decade building capacity of smallholder farmers to adopt sustainable food production that secures food supply, strengthens livelihoods and sequester carbon. This is in response to a growing population hence increased food demand, settlement among other essential ecosystem services. I grew up in a village witnessing first-hand a community engaged in charcoal making, sale of firewood, uncontrolled grazing and inappropriate agricultural practices all that threatens their existence. As a result widespread interference with vital ecosystem services followed including permanent rivers turning seasonal, frequent and severe droughts, loss of land productivity, natural resource based conflicts to mention but a few. Consequently, communities are impoverished, ill health and malnutrition is all-time high. It is against this background that I am motivated to champion a more responsive approach to food production system. I have spent my time in design and implementation of innovative development projects to build smallholder farmers’ resilience against climate change. I designed a community development project at Lariak Forest for livelihood improvement and environmental conservation. The project enabled a reduction in pressure on the natural forest for supply of wood and non-woody products through promotion of agroforestry and nature based enterprises. The project facilitated planting of assorted seedlings under forest rehabilitation and on farm planting configurations. I later designed and implemented a Household Economic Empowerment Programme (HEEP) targeting vulnerable members of the community in Laikipia County. Project components included kitchen gardening, fruit tree seedlings, small stocks (sheep and goats), yellow-fleshed sweet potatoes and poultry farming reaching over 2,500 households directly. I am currently implementing Laikipia Regenerative Agroforestry Project to address land degradation, enrich soils and improve livelihoods. The project has seen over 1,200 hectares of land restored, value addition of Aloe, Moringa, honey and other natural products.
